He’s achieved more than anyone ever before at The Vanguard -- and that’s only one reason we chose him

What others are saying...

John Canzano, sports columnist for The Oregonian

When two Portland State basketball players were jailed in Mexico on spring break and charged with attempted murder, some media members rushed to judgment and wrote about the incident as it was relayed by Mexican authorities. Hellman had the maturity and good judgment to step back and consider that he was dealing with a corrupt justice system and shaky details. Within 48 hours, the players were released and the charges were dropped. Hellman's good judgment, instincts and reporting were instrumental in the PSU student newspaper having a credible, accurate, well-written account of the incident and the speculation that there was a back-room deal cut to release the players.

At PSU, he's covered a bomb threat, and reported on the arrival of football coach Jerry Glanville, and during a September football game, while everyone else was watching the game, Hellman was scooping the competition by reporting that someone snuck into the locker room and robbed the team of $9,000 in personal property while the game was going on.

I’d take him on my team today. He's going to be successful in this industry and do great work.

David Holley, editor-in-chief for The Vanguard

Nathan Hellman is one of the most dedicated journalists ever to work at the Vanguard. He has spent three tireless years as a sports writer, news writer, then sports editor, and will begin his fourth year at the Vanguard next year as the editor-in-chief. Nate has a natural sense for writing and reporting. He knows when people are being honest, and has an incredible ability to multi-task. More often than not, he is the first person to come to the office and the last person to leave each day. Nate has also had the opportunity to freelance for The Oregonian, the largest newspaper in the state of Oregon. He has accomplished more than any single individual at the Vanguard.

Darlene Geiger, undergraduate adviser for Portland State University’s Department of Communication
