Kyle Hansen
A multimedia maven who helped an entire staff ride the new wave of journalism
What others are saying...
Jan Shaw, adviser for the Spartan Daily
Kyle was the driving force behind moving the Spartan Daily massively forward on multimedia — thinking up really original story ideas, applying technology in new ways and training an entire newsroom of quasi-clueless new reporters to become pretty skilled multimedia reporters.
He would take stories headed for print and make them dance — well, sometimes it was more like a polka — by turning students loose on them with sound and movement.
Kyle is simply filled with original ideas and enthusiasm and a passion for journalism, and he has the kind of personality that just sort of sweeps others up in his ideas.
Kyle is going to really make a mark in journalism, especially the online world. He is a phenomenon and I think the best of the new generation.
David Zugnoni, opinions editor for the Spartan Daily
I consider Kyle a pioneer of the Spartan Daily Web site.
Kyle, exhibiting an understanding of where the industry is going, decided to add a lot more to the Web site, including video coverage (sometimes live videos) to complement stories (and sometimes stand on its own), creating Web images to complement ongoing stories, live blogs, streaming the president’s news conferences and adding video and audio into the body of online versions of stories.
Kyle did all of this not only with tech skills but with a respect to journalistic principles. Our online hits reached record numbers this semester, and they continued to go up throughout the semester, and it's no coincidence that Kyle was the one behind the Web.
It's hard to pinpoint a particular moment or achievement that Kyle should be recognized for because he has the unique virtue of consistency. We just always knew we could count on him. He is one of the very few editors who never fell into the stress that a lot of other editors fell into at one time or another over the semester.
He doesn't let personal differences get in the way of doing good work and keeping morale up. When you're working too many hours for laughable pay, morale is really important.Kevin Myrick, Web reporter for the Rome News-Tribune
Kyle, who I worked with at Washington Post.Newsweek Interactive as an intern during the Fall of 2007, was one of the leaders in the room whenever we needed someone to go out and cover a story. His talents ranged from video editing to writing, and his work never went unnoticed.
Mostly though, Kyle was at his best when working with others on the team to cover something: from football games to a story about picking out a Christmas tree, he has the ability to go on any story and gather whatever is needed to push out a final product.
