Went the extra mile – or 500 miles – in his tireless reporting on Joe Paterno and the football team

What others are saying...

Andrew Staub, former sports editor for The Daily Collegian

Kevin was perhaps the most ambitious Penn State football reporter the Collegian has ever seen. For example, before Penn State played Notre Dame last fall, Kevin did not want to rely on teleconferences for his stories. He drove nearly 500 miles to Notre Dame to attend a Fighting Irish practice and write two preview stories for the weekend. On another occasion, Kevin wanted to write a feature on starting quarterback Anthony Morelli, so he drove to Pittsburgh to report on Morelli’s legacy in his hometown.

But Kevin's dedication doesn't end there. He routinely wrote five to 10 stories per week, balancing breaking news with strong enterprise reporting. He also did a weekly podcast based on Joe Paterno's press conferences. In the spring semester, Kevin served as an assistant night sports editor, using his experience to help our younger sports staffers. He has developed from a great reporter to a great manager and will be remembered as one of the hardest working sports staffers the paper has ever had.

Terry Casey, editor-in-chief for The Daily Collegian

In terms of The Daily Collegian, there is one wall that is rarely crossed: sports staff and the rest of the news division. Kevin didn't just cross the wall; he soared over it. He left behind semesters of prestigious beats on the campus staff for a lower beat on sports. His prior experience quickly proved to be an asset to the staff when athletes began to find themselves in legal trouble.

Kevin's appointment to the football beat was not the most popular decision at first. He was a newsie, after all -- an outsider. He hadn't climbed his way through the sports staff ranks. These days, it's easy to forget that dissent. Kevin brought his experience, hard-working nature and calm nature to the beat that requires the best. His work has shown that a great reporter will succeed in any part of a newspaper.

John Harvey, news adviser for The Daily Collegian

As the football beat writer – a prestigious assignment that only goes to the best reporters on staff – Kevin did not disappoint, writing hundreds of articles and standing out as our best reporter. He even got into a few run-ins with legendary coach Joe Paterno, but in a humble and effective way he always trudged on.
