Jason Brummond
Calls himself as a real-life Michael Scott – but he’s more like a mix of Jim Halpert’s charm and Dwight Schrute’s persistence
What others are saying...
William Casey, publisher for The Daily Iowan
I have no doubt that without Jason Brummond as editor-in-chief of The Daily Iowan this year, we would be far behind both professional and peer newspapers in terms of convergence. Luckily for us, he was rightfully chosen by a board of trustees to lead our paper for the 2007-2008 school year. Since that moment, we have been recognized by the Iowa Newspaper Association as having the best Web site -- in all of Iowa. That means we beat out the Des Moines Register and other respected media organizations in the state.
Jason's background of both business and journalism has proved an excellent combination in his current position. He is essentially in charge of three daily news platforms: the paper, the web and the newscast -- clearly a heavy load for a University of Iowa senior. He has handled it with aplomb. Jason is a true leader; he is a smart, capable, well-liked and hard-working young man. He has taught me that future editors are well-advised to understand the business side as well as the editorial responsibilities of running a paper.
Vanessa Shelton, adjunct professor for the University of Iowa, executive director for Quill and Scroll International
Jason likes to fashion himself as a real life Michael Scott. And to show his affinity to Scott and his television show The Office, Jason’s desk sports a “World’s Best Boss” mug and a bobble-head of … Jason. The memorabilia are courtesy of his staff. In a promotional video produced by Jason and a DITV producer, he even personified Scott. The sense of humor complements Jason’s ability to remain poised in the face of stressful events. He never gets too excited about successes; and never too upset about failings. His motto is there’s always room for improvement … in the next day’s edition.
With the perfect set of skills for the top DI job at this time, Jason’s multimedia focus has helped move the organization to collaborate in story telling. He encouraged and devised methods to bring the staffs of the newspaper, the television news program and the Web site together to coordinate their coverage. As a result, the news organization is a national leader in all media formats, including online.
Charles Munro, visiting instructor for the University of Iowa’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication
I have watched Jason mature remarkably over this past year as editor of The Daily Iowan. He was always a bright student, but the experiences he has had in working through difficult “people” situations, in overcoming rejection -- including a decision in 2007 not to offer him The Daily Iowan editorship -- and in moving on have provided just the seasoning he personally needed! He may lack the colorful, high personality characteristics of some college newspaper editors, but his deliberate nature provides a much-needed quality in leading an organization with more than its share of intense, colorful characters.

UI 'active-shooter' alert didn't make campus safer
Source | The Daily Iowan
At a little after 8 a.m. Monday, UI students could be forgiven for panicking. Text messages loom large on tiny screens: An "active shooter" may be near campus. E-mails spout from the UI's servers. Doors slam, people cower, and much of the campus, in the absence of further information or instruction, shuts down. Has it actually happened here?
