She delves deep into every subject, even if it includes stripping down to report on a nudist colony

What others are saying...

Breanne Schmidt, design editor for The Daily O’Collegian

She can make the must mundane of subjects interesting. Regardless of whether her story is about something small on campus or coverage of an execution, it draws you in and makes you want to read it. She takes dedication to another level. She has reported naked for her story on a nudist resort, she has reported from a jail on an execution and she has traveled to Arkansas to interview Oklahoma State's oldest living alumna. Jaclyn has an excellent sense of right and wrong and love of journalism ethics. Nine times out of 10 she is the one we ask to make tough decisions and calls because our paper does not have an adviser.

Joey Senat, associate professor for the School of Journalism at Oklahoma State University

As a reporter in my public affairs reporting course and as an editor at the student-run newspaper, Ms. Cosgrove has demonstrated maturity and courage beyond her peers, diligence in her reporting and a strong desire to improve her already-excellent journalistic skills. She takes constructive criticism to heart, showing good humor and graces during critiques.

Of particular note is her reporting on the plight of poor and disabled children in Kenya. Written after a two-week visit to the country, her articles and column not only educated Oklahomans on the challenges facing children half-a-world away but also attempted to debunk stereotypes about Third World countries.

This past semester, Ms. Cosgrove began organizing a campus “club” dedicated to the principle of free speech. Her stated aim is to create a regular forum for public debate open to any speaker, Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative. Her efforts will not only support our university’s educational mission as a marketplace of ideas but also better prepare students for meaningful participation in a democratic society.

Jenny Redden, former managing editor for The Daily O’Collegian

Jaclyn Cosgrove has a heart. A big one. Three semesters ago, an OSU student died in a car accident. The editor-in-chief didn’t want to run an obituary because she said she worried other students had died and gone unnoticed in the paper. For the sake of consistency, she did not want to cover the story. Cosgrove disagreed. She felt compassion for that student and her family and friends left behind. Cosgrove wrote the best obituary with as many quotes and personal stories as she could find. The story ran on Page 5, but Cosgrove was just glad it was included at all.
