UWIRE 100

The best and brightest student journalists

When will the finalists be announced?

UWIRE accepted nominations through March 25th. The UWIRE 100 will be announced in late April in a special section on UWIRE.com. UWIRE will create a detailed profile page and a short bio for each finalist, who can upload a resume and their best work. Broad media coverage is expected.

What criteria will be used to select the UWIRE 100?

UWIRE will evaluate each candidate based on proven excellence in a field of journalism and the quality and quantity of his or her nominations. Each member of our UWIRE 100 will be among the brightest and most promising student journalists in his or her respective fields and show:
- A proven dedication to both high ethical standards and advancing the field of journalism
- An impressive journalism record with an emphasis on work completed in the 2008-2009 school year
Any college student -- undergraduate or graduate -- will be eligible to become a UWIRE 100 honoree.

Who selects the UWIRE 100?

A panel of UWIRE staffers will make the final decision on which students will be honored. Each panel member spends hours each day sorting hundreds of articles, photos and videos to find the best examples of college journalism. The UWIRE panel will use this background to evaluate the nominees' nominations and submitted work.

Who is eligible?

Any college student during the 2008-2009 school year -- undergraduate or graduate -- is eligible to become a UWIRE 100 honoree. There is neither a cap to the number of honorees from a particular school nor is there a limit to the number of honorees that will be chosen for a particular position.

Does your media outlet have to be a member of UWIRE in order for you to become a UWIRE 100 honoree?

No! We are searching for the best and brightest college journalists from around the nation -- not just from the 850 UWIRE affiliates.

What does the UWIRE panel look for in a nomination?

The most effective nominations will come from individuals who have worked closely with you and know your strengths. The nominations could come from student leaders, advisers or professors and should include concrete examples of how the nominee excels in his or her position and why the nominee is one of the nation's best and brightest college journalists. The nomination should also include several links to the nominee's best work.

Can I nominate more than one person?

Of course, but remember the quality of each nomination is taken into account when evaluating each nominee.

Can I nominate myself?

Yes, but keep in mind the panel is heavily considering nominations when selecting the final 100 students.

Who are the previous UWIRE 100 honorees?

The UWIRE 100 students during the '07-'08 school year hailed from 66 different schools, ranging from small liberal arts colleges such as Cabrini, Loras and Hamilton to large state universities. This was our first year of doing the project. Among the schools represented by multiple members of the UWIRE 100 are the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (five), Penn State University (four), the University of Iowa (four), the University of Florida (three), Syracuse University (three), Indiana University (three) and the University of Texas-Austin (three). Fifty-nine of the students were graduating seniors and three were freshmen.
