Emma Zayer
The unlikely arts editor who saved her newly founded online news site
What others are saying...
Marissa Moran, co-editor-in-chief for The Daily Colonial
Emma dedicated the past two years of her college experience to a paper that at first seemed like it wouldn't survive. The Daily Colonial was started four years ago by a group of students (Emma included) who thought George Washington needed an alternative source for student news (other than the traditional paper, The Hatchet). When the obstacles seemed never-ending, Emma never gave up on her staff or the potential of The Daily Colonial, and her persistence and dedication really paid off. Emma has been the editor-in-chief since spring 2007, and the paper has since grown and received the Pacemaker Award from The Associated Collegiate Press.
Zach Epstein, co-editor-in-chief for The Daily Colonial
After getting to know her, it became abundantly clear how passionate she is about journalism and how dedicated she is to her craft and the organization. The Daily Colonial is sort of the new-kid-on-the-block of GW’s student journalism scene, with The Hatchet (the print newspaper) fairly entrenched in its role on campus. However, as a founding member of The Daily Colonial, Emma saw that not only was there a place for online journalism on campus, but there needed to be another outlet for students to hone their journalistic skills and an additional source for campus news.
Emma stepped in to the editor-in-chief position this year amid some turmoil in what was a young organization. Under almost any other leader, The Daily Colonial might have folded. But Emma put her heart into everything she did and she really carried it through on her shoulders alone. Today, The Daily Colonial is stronger than ever.
Gillian McHale, former managing editor for The Daily Colonial
Heading into the 2007-2008 school year, the Daily Colonial had no clear editor-in-chief. I had retired after fall semester 2007, and all other senior management were graduating. As the only remaining founding member left on the team, Emma took the initiative, left the Arts section and has been editor-in-chief for the past year. She has done a good job under adverse circumstances, which I believe is equivalent to a phenomenal job at a better established publication.
Marvin Kalb, host of The Kalb Report, former CBS News and NBC News correspondent, professor emeritus at Harvard University
She took advantage of school breaks to travel once to Cuba and once to Mexico, and I was impressed by her footloose curiosity, which is a very valuable tool for a journalist. Emma is a serious person, determined to do well in journalism, and I believe she will succeed.
