Sports, opinion, arts – you’ll find his byline nearly everywhere

What others are saying...

David McHam, professor at the University of Houston’s School of Communication

If you were anywhere near the University of Houston during the last few years you could not have missed Eli Jabbe. He was in the campus newspaper, The Cougar, almost every day. I first noticed him in sports, then later on the opinion pages, then covering entertainment. Finally news.  I don't think anyone ever at the University of Houston has had more bylines in The Cougar. Last summer he was in a study abroad program in France, and guess what, he wrote about that in a series of articles in the Cougar. He has an engaging personality. It may be a cliché, but he never met a stranger.

Alexandra Flint, mentor and University of Houston alum

Eli’s vivid recollections of France bring colorful stories to life and leave the reader in suspense for his next article. The travel series brings back my own study abroad memories while giving me fresh insight into his unique experiences. Further, as a U.S. expatriate living in London, I find his perspective insightful and poignant given the rapid globalization of the world. My personal relationship with Eli has allowed me to see how much he has learned and grown from not only his journey to Europe, but also his passion for writing. Eli’s journalism writing this year has been entertaining, inspiring and thought provoking, which make him an excellent example of a college journalist in America.

James Campbell, former editorial board member at The Houston Chronicle

I spent almost 20 years at the Houston Chronicle, most of it on the paper's editorial board. Eli was assigned to do a story on my journalism career. As you might imagine, my days are busy. Eli called and e-mailed repeatedly, only to be put off another day by this busy executive. He finally prevailed when he caught me with a moment of time one Sunday night. His questions were thorough as well as thoughtful. He challenged me to think about journalism when I began my career and how it has evolved. To make sure he didn't miss anything, he followed up the next day by e-mailing questions to me. Eli's persistence in going after a story demonstrated an incredible work ethic and a quest to get the story right.

"Study Abroad." It's a term that every college student has heard at some point. And after my experience with such a program this summer in Angers, France, I don't feel that it totally conveys how exciting and memorable a foreign education is.
