Chelsea Otakan
‘The face of new journalism’ is winning awards for her paper’s site – and she’s only a freshman
What others are saying...
Nick Coltrain, editor-in-chief for The Nevada Sagebrush
Chelsea Otakan doesn’t fit the traditional mold of journalist and that makes her all the more valuable to the industry. Her insight and Web innovation have been a constant on our staff.
We want a city guide? She dummies something up that’s better than we could hope for.
We need something fixed on the Web site now? She’s already taken care of it and streamlined the page. She takes it upon herself to tweak the layout and make nevadasagebrush.com one of the most visually appealing Web sites out there.
But most importantly, she wants to try new things constantly. She finds out about new programs and twists them to our purposes expertly.
She thinks ahead of the curve with everything she does and untainted by old thoughts. From streamlined design to new approaches to Web standards, she is the face of new journalism.
Brian Duggan, former editor-in-chief for The Nevada Sagebrush
Chelsea is small, but full of talent. She helped redesign our Web site, which has been nominated for a Pacemaker. She has implemented many new innovations that the staff can now use, such as podcasting, blogs, videos and twittering. Chelsea may be new to journalism but she is excited to see where it can go. She is multi-talented: she can write, she can shoot photos and she knows how to use the Web, from content management systems, Flash to other applications. She is a model for the future journalist -- Web savvy and a storyteller.
David Calvert, freelance photojournalist
Chelsea Otakan is a versatile storyteller. She is passionate about using new technology to better reach an audience and understands the rapidly changing industry. She is the driving force behind nevadasagebrush.com. When the staff said it wanted to start podcasting, Chelsea made it happen. When the staff wanted to add video to its reporting tool kit, Chelsea made that happen as well. From minor design tweaks to major site overhauls she responds quickly and incorporates feedback.
Highlighted work
High crimes: pot, racism and unicorns

This time around, as the dynamic duo deals with much larger troubles than the munchies, “Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay” keeps the stoner-comedy genre alive with dirty humor, over-the-top characters and the return of everyone’s favorite child-star turned-unicorn-jockey.
‘88 Minutes’ a little too long
Source | The Nevada Sagebrush
“88 Minutes” is nothing more than a mediocre crime-based thriller that not even Scarface himself can save. With uninspired acting, feeble plotlines and flimsy editing, this film can’t even survive 88 minutes of its own 108-minute run time.
