The former soccer player is quick on his feet covering tough beats

What others are saying...

Gabe Nelson, managing editor at The Michigan Daily

As the university administration beat editor last fall, I assigned him a story. He wasn't my beat reporter, but the beat, probably the toughest and most prestigious at the paper, was vacant after one of my reporters decided to move on. He came back after writing the story with several ideas for stories on the beat, and had already started looking into all of them. That inspiration and dedication was enough that I made him my beat reporter at that moment.

Sharon Pomerantz, lecturer at the University of Michigan

I taught him for English 325 (intermediate to advanced creative nonfiction) and he got the highest grade in the section -- he is virtually the only student to whom I've ever written the following sentence: "this essay would make a great sample chapter for a book proposal." I wrote this because his work is just that professional.

Chris Herring, managing news editor for The Michigan Daily

Andy's work has been sensational all year long. Somehow, in his first year writing for our paper, he's managed to crank out nearly 60 stories in just a semester and a half. And these stories are no short write ups on unimportant issues. These are stories that seemingly have the potential to be picked up by a larger paper. He has a work ethic unlike any other reporter I've met. I'd say that Andy is as talented a writer as you'll find with his level of experience. This was the first full year in which Andy wrote for a newspaper. He actually started as a soccer player at Marquette University (which, I'm sure, left him no time to write for that school's paper). He's transferred to a few different schools now, and we felt fortunate for this great reporter to land at Michigan and write for The Michigan Daily.
