He was the backbone of the newsroom after Eve Carson – his friend – was murdered

What others are saying...

CA Tuggle, adviser for Carolina Week, professor at University of North Carolina

Our campus suffered a tremendous tragedy this semester with the murder of our student body president. Adam was the backbone of our coverage, spending countless hours at the police department and piecing together the particulars of the case. He and his co-anchor delivered a moving, heart-felt tribute to Eve Carson six hours after we learned the murder victim's identity. With him leading our coverage I had no doubt that the team would handle the situation in a professional, yet sensitive way. He is the consummate professional, yet maintains his human side. That's a rare combination even in the professional ranks, and because of that, I expect him to do tremendously well as a working journalist. He is quite simply one of the best ever to come through our program.

Adam has been tested in some very trying times. Most recently he drove the coverage of the murder of UNC's student body president, Eve Carson. Adam was one of the last people to interview Carson before her death. And on the day her identity was released to the public, Adam paid tribute to his friend in the best way he possibly could. He sought the truth, and reported it. He covered every angle of the story for WCHL Radio and reported and anchored a special edition telecast totally devoted to Carson. The video has been viewed by hundreds of thousands on Youtube.com.

The funny thing is, Adam is in college, but he has never been a "college journalist." Adam spent his college years taking advantage of every opportunity possible to better his reporting and journalism skills. He doesn't let any story scare him or intimidate him, he jumps in and grabs on with both hands (and feet) until he gets to the bottom of the situation. Adam very rarely asks me questions about how to handle a situation; he uses his own experience and judgment to create a great angle.

One of the moments that I remember with Adam was the local elections in fall 2007. I had only been in Chapel Hill a short time. I asked Adam if he would anchor our three-hour long political show for the elections with our main radio personality, Ron Stutts. Everyone in the newsroom was somewhat dreading elections -- it was my first go-around, we had a lot of work prepare, and not enough hands. However, Adam was a different story. He looked at me and said (with pure excitement that you could clearly see in his eyes), "I can't wait, I am so excited. I remember when I was a little kid, and my Dad used to take me out when he was reporting, and we would go to the elections headquarters on election night, and watch the returns come in."
